Talk by Robert Harvey

At this meeting of the Special Interest Group, we had a presentation from Robert Harvey BA ARPS EFIAP CSci CEnv MCIWEM. Robert is a Devizes Photography Club member and is also a professional photographer and regularly gives talks and presentations to groups and clubs.

Robert gave a very interesting talk making us look at what we want people to focus on within our images, how large that focus point should be and what lens we should select to achieve that. He showed us various images to illustrate each point from fog, mist, and freezing fog on the Pewsey Downs and Charlton Beech Clumps to Mountains in the Dolomites and a recent trip to Iceland. We looked at images at various focal lengths and it was interesting to see how our perception for the image changed especially when perspective was compressed, also how we could eliminate distractions.  We went on to look at depth of field and where to focus. This talk happened the day after the landscape competition where Robert was awarded both print and PI trophies, and along the way also achieving a clean sweep in the Landscape Print Competition with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placings, so comments from Peter Orr regards all images from that competition were still fresh in our minds and this talk certainly helped form ideas on how we would tackle our landscape photography in the future.

Caroline then went on to show some very creative images on the theme of movement that some of the members had taken on a recent trip to London. Dates were discussed for future Special Interest Group Workshops.
