Photography in an AI World
Last night Devizes Photography Club welcomed on zoom Joe Houghton, one of two advisors on AI to the RPS, a tireless educator, speaker, consultant and tutor of teachers, on the subject of ‘Photography in an AI World’.
Joe takes a fascinating look into the fast-changing world of photography as it is being affected and changed by artificial intelligence. Whether it’s AI apps such as Topaz, On1, Luminar or DXO, old favourites like Lightroom and Photoshop, or other less well-known ones.
Joe explained how AI has been trained on data sets from the internet, explaining that all images posted on IG, FB and other social media will end up being used as sources of data. He then showed us on different websites the ability of the AI algorithms to write script, create and enhance images and then animate those images to include speech.
He reminded us that we should no longer believe anything we see or hear in media, as AI already has the ability to generate it. He also encouraged us to keep going out taking photos for ourselves, enjoy the technique and process for our own pleasure.
A thoroughly thought provoking talk which created a lot discussion between members. I am looking forward to creating my own virtual judge to critique my images and see what the AI comes up with.
