Beginners Section

Dartford Warbler by Richard Jones – 1st place

Richard’s image was taken one lonely morning in March down on Studland Heath in Dorset. 

Dawn in the Julian Alps by Tony Leach - 2nd place

Tony says “We drove to the highest car park on the Mangart Pass in the Julian Alps in Slovenia but the walk/climb up to the amazing view from the top was too challenging for me.  So I went just a quarter of the way up and, just after the sun set, was greeted with this superb misty view and great recession to a distant peak. I was well satisfied with the composition and shot I took … then waited 90 minutes by our car for the others to return”

Soaking up the Sun by Barbara Jones – 3rd place

Barbara’s lovely image was taken in the garden, he very kindly landed on a cane which gave me plenty of time to take him.

Chasing by Dave Johnson - HC

Dave says’ Chasing is from a local classic motox event held earlier this year near Chippenham. I recall that there wasn’t much access to the circuit to get different compositions and when I did find what I thought was a unique position I got challenged by an ‘event’ photographer claiming I needed liability insurance etc to take photos. Total rubbish as I was in a spectator area and ever so slightly possessive of the guy!’

African Hawk Eagle by Gerald Clarke- HC

The African hawk eagle was seen in Chobe national park. I had been waiting to catch many different bird species in flight or taking off. This eagle obliged, and this was one of several that made good images from that burst of shots. 

Etosha Bull Elephant by Gerald Clarke - HC

Gerald says ‘The Etosha bull elephant was seen while driving through the national park. Due to the dust in the air, the sky looked grey, offsetting the elephants skin coated in mud, and emphasising its size’.

Where the Wind Blows by Dave Johnson - HC

Dave’s perfectly composed image was taken on a club outing to the Dorset coast. At lunchtime we made our way to Kimmeridge Bay from Lulworth Cove, and while sat in the car park I saw some wind surfers. I sat on the cliff top watching and shooting with some really nice images for my time, and this was one of them.  

Great Spotted Woodpecker by Richard Jones - HC

Richard’s beautiful image was taken at a Wood Pecker workshop at Lake Pochard, Cotswold Water Park.

Intermediate Section

Prince of Wales Bridge by Craig Purvis – 1st place

Craig’s stunning image was taken on the return journey from Ystradfellte Falls. I took the opportunity of an ebbing tide, and favourable weather conditions to stop off at the Prince of Wales bridge. A number of compositions were available but, I chose to go with a pano and ensured I incorporated the freshly exposed mudflats as my foreground interest. I shot with my 12mm lens at f16 (which helps to achieve the 'star-burst' effect), and in order to smooth out the R.Severn, and add some movement to the sky, I went with a 25s exposure.

White (Square-lipped) Rhinoceros by Penny Clarke – 2nd place

Taken near Etosha National Park. I think the photograph shows how majestic these animals truly are and it is a shame that from January to June 2022 55 Rhino have been lost in Etosha this year with 11 in the month of June. 

Storm Approaching Crackington Haven by Bridget Codrington – 3rd place

I was walking in north Cornwall in June last year and while there, wanted to perfect the art of horizontal ICM (intentional camera movement). I went down to Crackington Haven on a really stormy day and was the only person on the beach. I took many ICM images before retreating at regular intervals to the nearby cafe to dry the camera and warm myself up with a cuppa. I love the menacing colour palette in this image, it totally reflects the conditions on the day.

Lloyds Building by Bridget Codrington - HC

I spent a day pottering around St Mary Axe in the City of London photographing architecture. The Lloyds building is of particular interest with its Brutalist design by the Richard Rogers Partnership, built between 1978 and 1986.

Sweet Dreams by David Evans - HC

David writes: ‘Very much along the lines of a previous entry from the Steam Punk Festival held at Lincoln over the August bank holiday. One of many participants who throng the Castle and Cathedral Areas of the city dressed and made up into some absolutely fabulous outfits’.

Jay taking a drink by Richard Blackbourne - HC

Richard says he was after some woodpecker shots taking a drink when the Jay dropped in. Lucky moment!

Eye in the Sky by David Lock - HC

David’s image was taken at the end of a long day while waiting for his family who were watching Adele. He just tried to get a different view of something we see lots of images of.

Advanced Section

Sassolungo by Robert Harvey – 1st place

The jagged peaks of Italy's Dolomites in the eastern Alps are made of magnesium-rich limestone known as dolomite, formed some 250 million years ago from coral reefs in a subtropical ocean. The rocks were subsequently uplifted by the collision of the European and African tectonic plates. I spent all morning waiting for the mountain to clear and when it did I used my telephoto lens to make a tight composition that emphasises the drama of its cloudy embrace.

Flamboyance of Flamingos by Jane Wiltshire – 2nd place

Jane writes: ‘I have had various trips to Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. I'm always drawn to the Flamingos and spend quite a time there taking photographs of them. As I had so many I thought I would attempt a creative image, cutting them out, using layer masks and textures in Photoshop to create the final look’.

Budir Church by Robert Harvey – 3rd place

This lonely church on the south coast of Iceland's Snæfellsnes peninsula is black as it is covered in pitch. It is ideally suited to a minimalist scene of snow-covered foreground and dark menacing sky.

Clifton Suspension Bridge by Jane Wiltshire - HC

Jane writes: ‘I had wanted to capture the Clifton Suspension Bridge at night for some time.
After having a good wander around looking at the best place to take it from, I settled on this composition, viewed slightly from above. I really liked the way the light from the bridge fell on the bushes and trees. I used my tripod, as the shot needed a long exposure’.

Leading the Way to Vestrahorn by Sue Wadman - HC

Sue writes: ‘This image was taken a day after a big storm hit Iceland in February.  The conditions were still very windy but we enjoyed a good hour or so at this location.  We were the first people there that day and the ground was pristine when we arrived.  I saw these footsteps and positioned myself quite low to the ground due to the wind and got them leading into the shot’.

Ferry Lines by Janet Rutter - HC

Whilst on holiday Janet was able to get very close and capture this abstract of a large red, white and blue Greek car ferry, which was very pleasing. 

Full Moon over Severn Estuary by Robert Harvey - HC

There are only a couple of days each year when the Full Moon rises between the pillars of the Seven Bridge. This was my second visit of 2022 to capture it. As the Moon cleared the bridge, a narrow band of cloud covered part of its disk and I thought the shot was spoiled. However, by running left along the sea defence embankment I was able to get a second go about a minute later after the Moon had cleared the cloud. I was not sure that from my new position the Moon would still fit in the gap between the pillars. Fortunately it did - just!

Man vs Nature by Frank Collins - HC

Man vs Nature was taken at the top of Glen Coe just before Easter 2022. Glen Coe provides magnificent dramatic landscape emphasised by the post-winter brownness of the foliage and some moody weather. Passing through this drama is the A92 - the main road from Glasgow to the Western Isles. Busy with pre-Easter traffic it seems totally incongruous with the landscape, as emphasised by the red lorry; a slow shutter speed does the rest.

Afternoon Storm over Diamond Beach by Frank Collins - HC

Afternoon Storm over Diamond Beach was taken in Iceland in February 2022. It had been a day of severe winter weather resulting in complete closure of all roads throughout Iceland for much of the day. The weather cleared enough in early afternoon for us to venture the few km to photograph the ice on the volcanic sand of diamond beach. The stormy weather made for dramatic light on the ice - suddenly there was a break in the cloud allowing a shaft of sunlight out to sea to complete the drama. None of this though conveys the wind and cold experienced in taking the shot.
