Beginners Section

Hello, Mr Bee Eater by Tony Leach - 1st place

I spent four hours shooting of loads of Hoopoe and Bee Eaters in some waste ground in Bulgaria. The positioning and apparent communication between the birds made this by far my best shot. Handheld. 

Mayflies Warming Up by Tony Leach – 2nd place

This was shot early in the morning in Dorset when the mayflies were still cold and could be moved to the ideal location. They stayed still so I could use a tripod to get them pin sharp. 

Thru the Esses by Dave Johnson – 3rd place

Dave’s image was taken at Donnington for the opening round of the British Super Bike season this year.  The actual photo is of one of the support classes, shot at 600mm through the safety fencing. Most of the time at these events I end up with closer crops but on this occasion I actually managed to think about the composition.

Catch of the Day by Tony Leach – HC

I had been in a kingfisher hide for over 8 hours. Fortunately a Test match was on to entertain me during the long periods when there was nothing to shoot. Eventually I got the shot I wanted- a kingfisher caught a fish and perched with it on a nearby branch. Handheld.

Richard took this image while he was down at Semington Brook with David Wilkinson on one of the Devizes Camera Club’s Special Interest Group outings. 

Intermediate Section

Sunrise, Marlborough High Street by Bridget Codrington – 1st place

Bridget says 'Sometimes it is worth getting up at silly o'clock on a freezing morning in mid-winter! This was one such occasion. I had walked up Treacle Bolly several times before sunrise to find a good position to photograph the High Street from above and loved the way the golden light warmed the red brick of the buildings, the misty recession of the scene ending up on the frosty downs and the beautiful trees in the foreground in the College grounds'.

Storm Approaching Stourhead by Peter Evans – 2nd place

I took this image with my Canon 5D mark 3 and a 17-40mm F4 lens. The camera was on a tripod. I also used a polarising filter to bring out the autumn colours and the bridge reflection.
I managed to not get too wet as I sheltered for about 30 minutes in the nearby church. I did have my waterproof clothing on though.

Advanced Section

Duo of Seabass by Jane Wiltshire – 1st place

Jane says ‘I captured my Duo of Seabass image as I wanted to reflect an image in the Old Masters still life style. I was not too popular at home as the fish were quite smelly. I used one soft box light placed in the Rembrandt lighting position’.

Miky Way, Kyance Cove by Robert Harvey – 2nd place

Kynance Cove is close to England’s southernmost point and enjoys very dark skies, making it ideal for Milky Way photography. I visited on a night when the maximum visibility of the Milky Way core at 3.30am coincided with low tide, enabling me to capture a reflection of the Milky Way in a pool of water on the beach. Because there is no artificial light in the area, I needed an additional 8 minute exposure to bring out detail in the rocks and cliffs.

12 light frames and 7 dark frames each at F/2, 20 seconds and ISO 12,800 plus one exposure of F/2, 8 minutes, ISO 3200

Kirkjufell before Winter Sunrise by Robert Harvey – 3rd place

Kirkjufell is a distinctive conical mountain on Iceland's Snæfellsnes peninsula. On this bitterly cold February morning, the small waterfall in the foreground was frozen into ice. At 9.30am the sun had not yet risen and scattered sunlight from below the horizon created a strong rosy glow in the sky opposite (the Belt of Venus) around the low gibbous Moon.

Siskin Dispute by David Wilkinson – HC

David’s beautiful image was taken in the Scottish Highlands in June of this year.
My friend set up a feeding station in his garden where the birds fed regularly, it was then a question of photographing the action when and if it happened. On this day I was particularly lucky as I had good light, this was very important as I had to maintain a high shutter speed with low ISO’s to create a sharp, clear image.
