Dave Gray will lead a landscape trip to the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, taking in Dunraven Bay and Castle during the afternoon, and nearby Nash Point for the evening and (hopefully) sunset. Dunraven Bay has featured in the television series ‘Merlin’ and ‘Doctor Who’, and also Bob Dylan’s ‘Hearts of Fire’ movie. Dunraven Castle was built in the 12th century on the remains of an Iron Age fort, and rebuilt in the 16th century before being mainly demolished in 1963. However, the gardens, gatehouse and ice tower still survive.
Nash Point is a spectacular layered cliff, overlooking a bedrock foreshore full of interesting shapes, cobbles and rock pools, which provide foreground interest to our landscape shots. Our trip is timed to coincide with low tide, to ensure the foreshore is visible, as well as sunset.
Timings and car-sharing will be firmed up nearer the time, but expect to leave Devizes late morning to arrive at Southerndown/Dunraven Bay around 2pm. We may then drive the short distance to Llantwit Major for a tea of fish & chips or kebabs (or feel free to bring your own), and a further 2-3 miles to Nash Point around 6.30pm. Sunset is around 9pm, and sunset colour should last for at least another 30 minutes, so expect to arrive back in Devizes around midnight.
As always with landscape trips, successful photography is weather dependent, and so we will go on the better weather day of Saturday 29th or Sunday 30th July.
