Trip to Ystadfellte Waterfalls
5 members set off from Devizes early on a Sunday morning in late October for a day’s workshop to enjoy the Ystradfellte Falls with autumn colour in the Brecon Beacons in South Wales. There had been some recent rainfall and the forecast for the day was for sunshine and light showers, so we were fairly confident we would have decent weather and the falls would have sufficient water coming down the rivers for us to photograph. The area contains 4 waterfalls in beautiful Welsh woodlands with a well signed circular route from the car park of around 7 miles in length.
On arrival at the car park, the forecast of ‘light showers’ had become stair rods of rain which continued for a good couple of hours - perhaps light showers was lost in translation into Welsh?
We walked down to the furthest waterfall Sgwd yr Eira, meaning the waterfall of snow and safely navigated the 130 odd steep steps that descend the ravine to the river. It was raining incredibly hard at this point which made walking around on wet rocks perilous and there was too much water in the waterfall to safely walk behind it.
By the time we arrived at Sgwd y Pannwr the rain was easing and we were able to photograph the surroundings more freely. The autumn colour in the trees was glowing after the rain. Onward to Sgwd Isaf Clun-gwyn where the improving weather conditions allowed us to sit on the rocks and eat our picnic lunches while enjoying the surroundings for a while. After lunch we walked on to the final waterfall Sgwd Clun-gwyn for our last shoot before returning to the cars and the journey home.
