Expressing Creative Vision
Linda Wevill FRPS EFIAP/b is a creative photographer and her aim is to achieve a soft painterly effect in her work, to reflect the essence of a place. She wants to express a personal depiction of her environment, looking beyond the obvious, to capture the atmosphere of the scene and the vision she is trying to convey.
Linda first talked about movement, showing us images from Devon to the Outer Hebrides of waves and beaches taken on a tripod often using filters and the effects of different shutter speeds. We then moved on to movement through ICM and how we should experiment. Images of Trees, flowers in vases, the London underground and Spittlefields on a wet evening gave us a taste of what could be achieved.
Linda very much embodies the quote by Jonathan Swift that “Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others” as she then went on to show what could be achieved with different lenses and multiple exposures from flora and fauna to fun fairs in London, as well as its stations and monuments.
In the second half, Linda discussed her two fellowships, the first submitted in May 2013. She told us that it was important to go with your passion as it comes through in your photography, and hers at the time was sailing. With so much time spent on the water Linda decided to use images of where people could secure boats at the side of the river or sea as a focal point. Focusing on the texture and rust of the objects blended with images of the sea as a background and different levels of opacity to bring important elements to the fore. Some images used the sea as a texture layer and some as part of the composition, with the toning of the images needing to be just right.
Her second panel was produce in June 2022 called Overlooked Beauty, her inspiration was taken from the french countryside where she has just bought a house, and a local maize crop. Returning as the crop developed she used multiple exposure, layering 4 to 5 images taken with a macro lens. Some elements of the panel were very abstract with the continuity of green to tie the panel together.
A quote very close to her heart is ‘The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes’ - Marcel Proust.
